Horse
Whisperer Diary -- week #2
For the past 20 years I have been working with wild horses and demonstrating the Porta-Flex Safety round pen and have had many, many wonderful experiences. I have done numerous public demonstrations showing how I gentle horses with a “Touch of Love“. It is a real thrill to see horses change from wild to trusting obedient companions. I had learned about lot of different tools such as flags, ropes, lunge lines and tarps, that if used with understanding, could cause a wild horse to want to be with me.
Then I join the Extreme Mustang Makeover challenge and met Luke 3:16. He was 4 years on the range in central Nevada as a stallion and gathered by the BLM in January 09 and gelded in April 09. Apparently he does not have good memories of his experiences with mankind. He has been extremely sensitive about being touched with a human hand. But Praise God I was able to touch him for the first time yesterday, on the 13th day of working with him.
The day before I had put my glove on a long bamboo pole and touched him on the back and he literally jumped way up high on the wall of the Porta-Flex and intended to get away. Fortunately I had made sure that all the stakes were in good and solid so the pen held him. He just bounced off and landed inside and never has tried to jump again.
You can see from the pictures in the
slideshow how I have used the different tools. Today I am going to expand the Porta-Flex
back out to a 50 ft diameter, put away all the tools and do something
that I have taught for at least 15 years. Pressure applied at the right
time with the right attitude and released the same way, will cause the
horse to want to be with you.
Check back next week to see how that works.
